Music
St John’s College has a very rich and varied extra-curricular life. All instrumental pupils are encouraged to join one of the choirs or ensembles which are arranged according to pupils’ stage of music development rather than their ages.
The music department presents three major concerts each year. Typically fifty to a hundred pupils would be involved in each one. In addition to this there is our Carol Service, the school Speech Night, Founder’s Day concert, 12 lunchtime concerts (in 3 separate series), as well as an extremely full programme for the Chapel Choir. 'Reformed' the newly formed girls' choir also practice and perform regularly.
Music plays an important role in assembly and worship. There is a boarders’ instrumental music group which leads the singing at the Thursday Boarders’ service. From time to time music is included in the year assemblies and whole school assembly. The Carol Service is a major public occasion, held in the cathedral, with our robed choirs including boys, girls and staff, and naturally music makes a significant contribution to the evening.
