St John’s student wins place with National Youth Theatre

Sixth Form student Katherine Bement is celebrating after she auditioned against 4,600 other hopefuls and won a place on the National Youth Theatre’s Summer Programme.

Katherine auditioned against 4,600 other young people in the February half-term, and in April received the news that her monologue had impressed judges enough for a place on the National Youth Theatre’s (NYT) Summer Programme. The programme is a two-week acting course at Bruford College of Theatre Performance, near London, from 14– 26 August.

Sixth Form student John Hui has had his art work printed and displayed on Billboard’s across the area as part of a national art competition.

John was crowned one of ten winners of the ‘Who Are You?’ national design competition run by the Arts University College at Bournemouth (AUCB) and JCDecaux, beating entrants from all over the UK, Europe and even America.

St John’s Pupils hit the right notes in Musicians Have Talent Final!

The best musicians of St John’s College put on an incredible and varied show of talent and skill at the school’s third annual Musicians Have Talent competition on Wednesday 28 March. The standard this year was incredibly high, but it was a piano performance of ‘Danza Espanola’ that won Sixth Form student Fernando Rosety the Musicians Have Talent 2012 award.

Chapel Choir gain more honours at Portsmouth Music Festival

Members of the highly acclaimed St John’s Chapel Choir are celebrating after they were awarded the Bertram Bradshaw Trophy for the most outstanding choral performance at the 2012 Portsmouth Music Festival - for the second successive year!

Hollywood glamour at the 2012 Rock Challenge

On Thursday 1 March a group of St John’s College Senior School pupils took to the stage at Southampton Guildhall for their first ever Be Your Best Rock Challenge performance. Nine schools performed on the night to give the audience an evening of entertainment and energetic dance.

The St John’s piece was titled ‘The Rise and Fall’ and through dance the team told a story of a young girl (Rhiain Tempest) who dreams of the stardom and glamour of Hollywood. The team comprised 65 members, some of whom performed on stage while others assisted back stage with props, hair and make-up. The performance really was an excellent display of team effort.

Spring Art Show success

Family and friends of pupils in the Junior and Senior School attended the school’s first whole-school Art Exhibition on Thursday 23 February to help raise money for children’s charity Soham for Kids. Over £300 was raised for the charity, which provides free schooling to children living in the deprived area of Hyderabad, India.

Our Chapel Choir to lead the Pontifical High Mass

They have been performing for less than three years, but already reached such acclaim that the 42 choristers of the St John’s Chapel Choir are to lead the Pontifical High Mass at the Vatican this summer.

The award-winning choir will depart on Monday 20 August. The choir will then head to Rome where they will lead the Pontifical High Mass in the Vatican on Sunday 26 August.

On Wednesday 7 December our four Houses (Alan, Damian, Edwin and Leo) battled it out on the stage to take the House prize for the Best Performance. This year’s theme was ‘New beginnings’, and each house produced an entertaining short play.
