Year Four
In Year Four the emphasis is on providing a challenging and stimulating curriculum and a wide range of additional opportunities. In Literacy, a range of topics include Poetry, descriptive writing, grammar, spelling and creative story writing. In Mathematics the national numeracy strategy is followed with regular assessment that allows for all abilities to be challenged and setting to take place.
Science topics include 'moving and growing', 'forces', 'electricity', and 'materials'. Children have an opportunity to engage with many practical activities.
All other curriculum areas are fully covered and in History a major topic involves studying famous people of Portsmouth. In Geography pupils have the opportunity to study the local area in detail and there are many trips in and around the city to support our topics.
Music, Sport, the Creative Arts and ICT are all fully covered with specialist teaching available and excellent facilities at our disposal including a well equipped Sports Hall and ICT Suites.
In Year Four children gain more experience of specialist teaching and different teaching areas without losing the strong support of their class teacher who still teaches them many lessons. Children are encouraged to become independent learners, to be responsible for their possessions and cope with an increasing amount of homework. There are ample opportunities to take part in team sports, Choir, Clubs and school Chapel services each week. Year Four aims to prepare children for the more demanding and challenging work of the last two years in the Junior Department. Each child is challenged to reach their potential.
