Year Three

Year 3 assemblyYear Three is the first year of the Key Stage Two curriculum and provides the children with many valuable skills for the rest of their time in the Junior Department. In Year Three children experience a wide range of learning and experiences. They have the opportunity to study subjects in greater depth and many of the subjects and topics taught are linked which enhances the work the children do. The majority of the teaching in Year Three is led by the form teacher with specialist teaching for French, Games, Music and Art.

The children enjoy a range of topics including the Romans where the children get a chance to visit Fishbourne Roman Palace and see for themselves what life was like in the Roman times.

Year 3Science is a particular favourite in Year Three as the children have many practical based investigations. The children study six Science topics throughout the year ranging from 'helping plants to grow' to 'light and shadow'.

There are five Numeracy and Literacy sessions every week. In Mathematics, one session a week is dedicated to Mental Arithmetic skills. Children are grouped according to ability in Maths, allowing for small group support and extension activities to take place.

In Year Three, the children have one PE session a week and cover various sports from Hockey to Gymnastics. The children also have one games session a week at the playing Fields. For one half term block the children have swimming lessons on Friday afternoons. Lots of children get the chance to play for the school teams in football, netball, rounders, rugby and cricket.

There is a wide range of co-curricular activities available to Year Three including knitting, music, sports, Spanish, drama and dance. The majority of children involve themselves fully in the co-curricular programme. In music lessons, everyone learns to play the recorder and many children join the Choir. Prayer times, assemblies and Chapel services also involve the children fully and provide wonderful opportunities for spiritual development. Year Three provides a supportive environment for boys and girls to achieve their full potential.
