Sports at St John's
Rugby
Rugby is the main winter sport and is taught using grids and small-sided games as well as full practice games. Teams play home matches on the numerous pitches available at our extensive playing fields at Farlington. There is a full programme of Saturday fixtures (Rugby | Hockey) throughout the Autumn Term. Sides are also entered for 7-a-side competitions. A tradition of biannual touring has been continued. Our previous tour of Hong Kong and Australia took place in 2009, and another major tour is being planned for the future.

Junior School Rugby
Rugby is the main sport for boys in the Junior School during the Spring Term. A full set of fixtures is arranged from Under 9s to Under 11s against other independent schools, usually on a Wednesday afternoon. Regular training is organised on Saturday mornings at our playing fields. In recent years school teams have enjoyed considerable success at A and B levels, however the emphasis is very much on participation for all and every boy has the opportunity to be coached by well qualified staff during Games sessions.
Netball
The facilities for netball include two courts at fields, an outdoor court and a Sports Hall court at the school. The girls play netball during games periods in the Autumn Term. Teams practise and play regularly. Our 1st VII play on Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoons. We also enter all Junior teams in the South East Hants competitions, and have recently won both cup and league U12 and U13 level. An Inter-House Netball Tournament is held annually. Biannual touring is also becoming a tradition for our netballers. Our previous tour of Hong Kong and Australia was a first for St John's, and another major tour is being planned for the future.
Junior School Netball
Netball is the main girls sport during the Spring and Autumn term, with a full fixture list in place for all age groups from Under 9 to Under 11. Regular training takes place during the week after school for all enthusiastic girls. We host an annual tournament for local independent schools and take part in a number of regional tournaments, often with great success. All girls are encouraged to take part in the annual inter house tournament.
Hockey
Hockey is the most recent addition to competitive sports at St John’s. It is played in the Spring Term during Games periods for both boys and girls. Boys up to Year 10 also enjoy and compete in Saturday fixtures and county tournaments. This is to be rolled out to the Sixth Form in the next couple of years. We have full use of astroturfs at HMS Temeraire and University of Portsmouth, and this is used during Games time as well as for fixtures.
Junior School Hockey
Hockey forms a key part of the PE curriculum for 7 to 11 year olds. Junior School teams have been very successful in recent years in the local primary schools league, regularly reaching the Finals and team training sessions are arranged after school for those in Years 5 and 6. The annual inter house tournament is always very keenly contested.
Football
Our 1st XI play in an U19 schools’ league on Wednesday afternoons against local colleges. Football coaching and a popular Inter-House competition take place in the Spring Term at our school fields.
Junior School Soccer
Soccer is the main sport for boys in the Junior School during the Autumn Term and a full set of fixtures is arranged against other independent and state schools from Under 8 to Under 11. The Junior School has a long tradition of success in local tournaments and regularly feature in the Portsmouth Schools' finals and the Independent Schools' 5-a-side finals. In recent years the Under 11 and Under 10 teams have won a record number of trophies locally. There is an annual tour to the West Midlands and a fiercely competitive Inter House Tournament that involves boys of all abilities who are keen to play.
Girls' soccer remains a popular and growing sport in the Junior School with regular after school training sessions and full participation in local leagues and cup competitions.
Athletics
Athletics is taught extensively throughout the summer. Students are taught all various athletic disciplines. Students compete nationally, locally and at county level. The annual Athletics Sports Day is a major event in the Summer Term.
Swimming
We have use of the swimming pools at HMS Temeraire. There is time-tabled swimming each Monday, and all pupils receive instruction at some stage during their time at St John’s. Year 7 will receive instruction in stroke techniques and Year 8 in personal survival.
Junior School Swimming
All Junior School classes enjoy a half-term teaching block at HMS Temeraire, followed by an annual swimming gala held at the same venue.
Cricket
We play cricket in each age group throughout the School, with numerous matches played at House and Inter-School level. Competitions entered include the Local Cup, County Cup, and some national competitions for particular age groups. The boys are taught using the three cricket squares and grass nets at the playing fields and indoor nets at school.
Rounders
The girls play rounders during the Summer Term. All girls enjoy friendly fixtures with local school and participate in the South East Hants Rounders Tournament.
Squash
We have two Squash Courts in the School's Sports Hall. It is played all-year round during PE lessons, extra-curricular clubs, an intra-school league and also matches against other Squash-playing schools. Some of our players go on to play at County level.
Games and Physical Education
During the pupils active sessions, opportunities are geared towards education and understanding the health benefits of participating in sport as well as enhancing individual performances.
Competitive ball games (including invasion, striking and fielding) are usually taught within games sessions at our playing fields. These are accompanied by net, wall, gymnastic and dance activities which take place at school. Health education is taught through a healthy lifestyle unit and other alternative games units, in a hope to inculcate a love of sport and increase understanding of the importance of participation within our sporting community.
